On Monday 9 September, the Architectural Draughting students were given an exciting tour of James Mudge Furniture Studio in Paarden Eiland.
“James Mudge Furniture Studio is a furniture design studio that has been operating in Cape Town since 2006, providing bespoke and customised hand-made, solid-wood furniture to their clients around the world.”
The students were first taken through the factory and production process by owner, and designer James Mudge. Here they learnt about how his visions came to life, from the timber that gets used, how it is cut and sanded to within 0.1mm precision until it becomes a bespoke masterpiece. They even got demonstrations on how some of the CNC machines, cutting/planning machines etc. are used.
This site visit will not only aid them in their current design project where they have to design their own multi-functional chair (in pairs) using corrugated cardboard, but will also teach them the design process in professional working environments, i.e. how the workflow process works. It also allows them to experience a different form of design, one which ties into Architecture very well, as many people forget that many famous architects were also furniture designers and even designed spaces around the furniture they designed.
